The year 2006 in Jeevodaya
A new group of little pupils came to the Centre, as they do every year. 42 children started school, whereas 14 finished it. It is a great joy for us, when children finish school and get professions, find a job and become self-reliant. The two smallest inhabitants of Jeevodaya are girls abandoned right after their birth. One of them still has health problems, but generally they develop properly. At the end of 2006 there were 490 people studying and living in Jeevodaya. Apart of that, the Centre supported 40 students studying at different schools, in various towns.
The number of guests and volunteers visiting our Centre is still increasing. They can see with their own eyes the development of the work. 5 volunteers from Poland (3 medical students, 1 from the special pedagogy, 1 agricultural student) and one nurse from Germany were helping us this year in Jeevodaya. There were also two Australian girls, a group of friends from Italy (including 2 doctors), Pallotine sisters with their Sister General as well as a delegation of fathers from the Catholic Apostolic Congregation (Pallotine fathers), with four Poles and the vice-general Father Zenon Hanas. This last visit was an official one. The issues concerning the future of the Centre were discussed with the members of the Pallotines General Management.
Sister Barbara Birczynska, the co-founder of Jeevodaya, decided to come back to the Centre. She was taking part in the creation of Jeevodaya from the moment of buying the land in 1969, and after Father Wiśniewski’s death she was responsible for the Centre as the President of the Society which was managing it. In 1989 she went to the Mysore diocese in South India and there she was leading another social activity for the poor. After having considered her situation carefully (sister Barbara is now 79) together with the present Jeevodaya Governing Body, she realized that the best solution would be to hand over the work to the Pallotines of the south province and settle at home she had helped creating. She has already moved to Jeevodaya.
We are planning to install a new generator, which will provide light to all rooms and a new water container. As the number of Jeevodaya inhabitants is still growing and the Centre is expanding, the generator and container being in use so far have become too small.
