European Youths Meeting
29.12.2009
The European Meeting of the Youth began in Poznań,
constituting another phase of pilgrimage of trust on earth,
organized each year by the ecumenical community from Taize.
Among 30 thousand young participants from Poland,
Ukraine,
France,
Germany,
Italy,
Portugal,
Russia,
Croatia,
there will also be representatives of others nations from all over the world.
They will be joined by our three students from Jeevodaya.
Together with Małgosia and Ania from our Secretary and their friend from Saudi Arabia,
they are hosted by our friends Marta and Mariusz Benedyk,
once volunteers in Jeevodaya.
During this year’s vigil,
the young people will meditate the words written by brather Aloise ,,Letter from China",
which was translated into 50 languages.
The Prior of Taize attracts our attention to the problem of understanding freedom in the modern world.
I hope that after returning home,
they will themselves share with you their experience and reflections.

Dear Helpers and Friends of Jeevodaya
We invite you with great joy to the meeting at the Chritmas Nativity Scene together with all those looking for and awaiting Jesus.
Among us there are lepers,
the poor,
the rejected,
those deprived of peace.
For them and to all of us Christmas is the Gospel that there is God,
who loves each one of us regardless of his possessions,
descent,
colour of skin or religion.
This God,
who takes the human body from the Virgin Mary to be God with us,
invites us so that in this modern world we are the witnesses of His love.
So that,
as Saint Damian from Molokai,
we take this Gospel to the most remote corners of the world and to the poorest people,
so that this love radiates also to these who don't know that they are poor living without God,
without love.
Let God's joy and peace reign in all hearts.
On behalf of the Jeevodaya community in India and Poland:

Gold Microphone for reports from India
17.12.2009
The correspondent for the Polish Radio in New Delhi,
Mr Krzysztof Renik has received today a prestigious Polish Radio award – the Gold Microphone for: 'brilliant technique,
journalist accuracy and passion in introducing modern world problems'.
Mr Krzysztof is a good journalist,
but most of all a good and obliging person to us.
Among much information sent by him from India,
there were also accounts on the Centre of Jeevodaya and interviews with dr Helena Pyz and our students.
Last year,
he spent Christmas in Jeevodaya together with his wife Elżbieta Dziuk.
They also visited us during dr Helena's stay in Poland.
Mr Krzysztof – we congratulate you and wish you many other professional and personal successes.

World AIDS Day
01.12.2009
Statistics related to HIV infection morbidity and mortality are horrifying,
especially in the poorest countries.
This problem concerns mainly young people and children.
For a year and half,
we have been accepting patients who start their HIV treatment to our Centre.
This is linked with many problems,
both medical and social. They stay with us a few/a dozen days,
often with their families.
We give them the necessary medical and counseling help.
In this period,
proper and valuable nutrition is of great importance.
Some patients come back many times,
other prefer to benefit from our advice living in their homes.
Among almost 400 people who benefited from our help during this period,
42 have already died.
In India,
the Catholic Church lead around 80% of institutions working for the benefit of people contaminated with HIV/AIDS.
This is one of the ways for international help to get to ill people.
The issue of the epidemy is also linked with low education level,
that is why the disease concerns mainly poor people in India,
where it is not easy to reach to all people with necessary information and help.
Let' s hope that spreading knowledge on the threats related to AIDS will efficiently limit the morbidity rate.
Education promoting correct sexual behaviors is of great significance.
We have a very appealing example of Uganda where the number of people contaminated with the virus decreased by 15% (from 21% in 1991 to 6% in 2002).
A programme promoting chastity and faithfulness to one partner was developed.
The time of Advent is a gift of Expectation,
where many issues should be thought over and sorted out according to the hierarchy of values.
Let's find a while for reflection and prayer for our suffering brothers.

A short visit
17.11.2009
In the last few days I was able to participate in the life of the Jeevodaya community in India.
When we decided that dr Helena would return to India on the day previously set,
the journey caused us some difficulties.
It was linked with some changes of flights in conditions totally different from the European ones.
As it turned out that we can still buy one more ticket (and at a very good price) in the same plane,
I immediately decided to fly to India with doctor Helena.
In this manner,
I could witness the welcome reception of Mami by the community of Jeevodaya who were awaiting her with anxiety,
take part in matters which were to be dealt with,
reach an agreement on issues relating to current cooperation between the Centre and the Secretariat.
I saw how the building works proceed.
I took part in the blessing of the foundation stone of the new house of Sonau,
the driver.
Together with doctor Helena,
I distributed the letters and gifts brought from Poland,
but first of all I met my Friends,
I could take part in their joys,
share their sorrows,
see for myself how fast the children are growing.
I send a warm 'Jay Jesu' to all Friends and Helpers of Jeevodaya.

The Day of Solidarity with the Church in India
08.11.2009
For the first time in Poland,
the second Sunday of November is celebrated as the Day of Solidarity with the Persecuted Church.
This year,
it is celebrated under the watchword India.
Archbishop Raphael Cheenath,
of the diocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar in Orissa is the special guest of the organizer of the event „Help to the Church in Need”.
On the territory of Orissa,
there were last year tragical events.
The Archbishop,
among others,
will preach during the Mass in the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw transmitted by the Polish Radio.
I am celebrating this day with doctor Helena in India.
Before our departure from Poland,
we met with archbishop Raphael in the Warsaw-Prague cathedral of Saint Florian.
After the mass celebrated in Latin,
there was a meeting in which the host of the cathedral,
archbishop Henryk Hoser,
also took part.
The guest was exhaustively answering to the questions and doubts concerning the present situation and causes of Christians persecutions in his diocese.
He turned our attention to the problem of social differences and lack of acceptance of social work,
led by the Church among the tribal inhabitants (lowest casts).
He was also talking about the attitude of the Church towards people,
who under pressure declared their return to Hinduism.
He underlined also that some hinduists were ashamed of what has happened and gave a sign of solidarity with the persecuted ones.
In Jeevodaya,
the joy dr Helena’s coming back home is great.
The children were missing Mami,
the older were concerned with her operation and recovery.
Doctor Helena’s short hair were the source of great surprise,
however these will quickly grow and everything is going to be back to the ordinary nature of events.

Thanksgiving
26.10.2009
We came from different parts of our Homeland to Jasna Góra in order to thank God for the 40-year-existence of Jeevodaya.
We started our pilgrimage on Saturday afternoon by recalling the history and development of the Centre,
illustrating this with archival photos,
presenting its present state and the possibilities of this institution further development.
We spiritually included the pain,
suffering,
loneliness of people affected with leprosy to the Christ's Way of the Cross,
which we celebrated in the Chapel of the Cardinal Wyszyński House of Memory as the Jasna Góra embankments were beseiged with young people.
During the Eucharist in the Chapel of the Miraculous Icon of the Blessed Virgin,
we had the possibility to stand just in front of Our Lady.
Many of us were overcome by emotion.
After dinner,
we gathered for the adoration of the Holy Sacrament in the chapel of the House.
After the Jasna Góra’s Alert,
some participants of our pilgrimage took part in the night adoration.
On Sunday,
we listened to the lecture 'Mary and the Eucharist' which preceded the common Mass.
At the meeting closing our pilgrimage,
we had the possibility to get to know each other.
Each one of us shared some information on ourselves,
our family,
work,
matters.
All this linked us to one big family.
As a summary of the 40-year-lasting activity of the Centre,
as well as my 20-year-lasting service among people affected with leprosy,
cooperation and help that I received from many people,
I quoted the words from the Act of Devotion to the Virgin Mary: 'I know that I will achieve nothing on my own,
You can however do everything that is the will of your Son'.
Let this be a token of gratitude for all the great God's works in the life of Jeevodaya.

A joy of meeting
20.10.2009
Our first meeting of the Young Friends of Jeevodaya organized after the summer holidays had a high attendance record.
20 people gathered in our house,
not counting little Lena from Poznań,
who slowly prepares herself to future important social roles.
I was happy to meet people several years after their stay in Jeevodaya.
I also met some others for the first time.
During our meeting,
we took up two important issues.
The meeting was held on the 17th of October,
on the day when India is celebrating the Divali feast.
This was a great occasion for our Indian students and experts in this topic to say a few words about the feast's origin.
We ourselves actively joined into its celebration: lights inside and outside the house,
small gifts (traditionally sweets),
and instead of new clothes – a TV set for common use in the place of the one which has recently been stolen.
Obviously,
there was 'bhara khana',
a big meal,
although in Italian style.
Most of all,
however,
there was the joy of being all gathered in such a nice and pleasant circle.
Individual and personal talks lasted till late at night.
The Canonization of the Apostle of Lepers in which I had the possibility to participate personally together with Anna was a reminder to the world of the problem of people suffering from leprosy.
The great figure of Damian de Veuster inspires many followers until present times.
Our meeting gathered mostly doctors,
but not only they were interested in the issue of treating leprosy nowadays,
especially in Jeevodaya.
There were many questions and reflections showing that education and solid knowledge on this subject is required. (HP)

Good time
16.10.2009
Each stay in Rome is for me a deep experience of the Church,
getting new strength from the history and the present time of christianity.
This time,
the canonization of the Apostle of Lepers,
Damian de Veuster and the Archbishop of Warsaw from the difficult time of the partitions,
Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński,
was a wonderful occasion for visiting the Holy City once more.
I am very grateful to all those,
who made this trip possible for me and at the same time so splendid.
Exercising the privilege for disabled people,
I got very close the Holy Father Benedykt XVI during the canonization ceremony and the general audience.
Despite architectural obstacles for people moving on wheelchairs,
I also took part in the Masses for the large assembled crowd of Poles in Rome.
I also had the chance to participate in the Eucharist celebrated by the tomb of the God's servant John Paul II.
Finally,
I met with a unique kindness wherever I went.
Meetings with people whose were in Jeevodaya or have heard of the Centre,
including the members of the General Board of Pallotines Fathers and the Mother General of Pallotines Sisters was an additional,
very memorable experience.
Father Rahul Joseph helped us to find a place to stay.
He also arranged entrance tickets and consecrated much of his time in organizing our stay in Rome.
Our visit to the Vatican Radio was a very important event,
where I told about my work in Jeevodaya and problems which we are going through as lepers and followers of Christ.
People accompanying me were obviously very loaded when moving in the City with a wheelchair.
I hope,
however,
that they were compensated for it by the conscience how happy I was.
I thank God and His and Our Mother for all the divine graces.

Again in Poland
11.09.2009
Our students Saru,
Sita and Manoj are once again in Poland.
Their holidays among their families went by very quickly.
Saru visited her parents and brother and sister in Raigarh,
and then she spent the remaining part of her holiday with Sita and Manoj,
for whom their family home is Jeevodaya.
All missed them so much,
and their mums cried both when welcoming them and when saying goodbye.
Such anguished partings are always difficult,
but hopefully they understand this departure as a chance of getting a better education and life in future.
The journey went fine,
peacefully.
On the way in Delhi they were hosted by our friends in the Polish Embassy.
It is high time to prepare oneself to the tasks of the coming academic year.
Our students have to enroll to their respective schools,
submit proper documents,
take additional exams.
Saru is continuing her education at the Medical University of Warsaw,
Sita wants to improve her English,
so as to teach others in future,
Manoj will try his hand at the High School of Enterprise and Management named after Leon Koźmiński in Warsaw.
As usual,
we ask for your prayer,
supporting especially the first steps in their respective Universities.

News about dr Helena
05.09.2009
On the 19th of August,
dr Helena underwent a surgical operation on her left knee.
The surgery was performed by a famous specialist orthopedist and traumatologist dr Robert Śmigielski from the Carolina Medical Center in Warsaw.
The patient is feeling well and will soon start rehabilitation.
We will try to take advantage of dr Helena's stay in Poland for our work in the Secretary of Jeevodaya,
among other arranging the archives brought from India,
especially that soon we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishing of the Centre in Jeevodaya.
There is also the autumnal pilgrimage of the Helpers and Friends of Jeevodaya to Jasna Góra on the 24th and 25th of October.
We do hope that dr Helena shall be with us.
Earlier,
in Rome,
there will be the canonization of the blessed father Damian De Veuster called the Apostle of the Lepers,
in which dr Helena wishes to participate.
Obviously,
all plans are in the hands of Our Lord and His Mother,
that is why we ask for your prayers
for their realization and for dr Helena's condition of health.

How we have been seeing India
23.07.2009
Out of curiosity and willing to discover new territories,
we leaved Raipur by train.
We were accompanied by Mrs Wiesia,
known in Jeevodaya as 'Aunty' and our Indian-Polish youth,
Manoj and Sita,
who had the possibility to get to know their country better.
Saru was at that time at her family home.
Direction: Puri in the state of Orissa.
There,
we were hosted by Father Kurian,
the commendable successor of Father Mariana Żelazek.
Thanks to him,
we got to know the activity of the ashram,
the life in the colony and we visited the most interesting spots in Puri,
among others the Jagganath’s Temple.
During our journey,
fair winds were in our favor.
We succeeded in taming a camel,
survive a sandstorm on the beach and bathe in the sea.
It was Manoj who especially appreciated the sea bath,
as he stood in front of Posejdon for the first time in his life.
The Sun Temple in Konark,
richly ornamented with elaborate sculptures,
made a big impression on us.
The next stop: Calcutta.
The first encounter with this town was not pleasant due to the overwhelming and omnipresent noise,
not always pleasant smells,
overcrowded streets and specific taxi drivers who tried to take us in at every turn.
We visited the places linked with the person of Mother Teresa: the orphanage,
the house of the abandoned and dying as well as the Mother’s House,
in which there is a tomb and museum dedicated to her.
Moreover,
we learned something more about Hindu culture when visiting the Palace of Tagore,
the renowned Noble Prize Winner.
This is still not the end of our Indian adventure.

10.07.2009
This time coming back to everyday life was not easy.
The beginning of the scholar year was as always difficult and many children tried to escape.
We accepted 36 new children,
including 2 girls to the 11th class.
The inauguration ceremony of school classes took place on the feast of the Patron of India,
Saint Tomas the Apostle (3 July).
The new director of the school father Vijay is replacing father Basil on this post.
Climate changes are to be felt in our part of the world as well.
Monsoon rains for which farmers yearn every year are getting late.
Fieldworks are stopped,
we pray warmly for rain in order to be able to sow the fields with rice.
I haven't undertook all duties,
I don't take part in the works of our ward for patients suffering from HIV/AIDS.
The doctor who was substituting me during my stay in Poland still visits the ward.
I managed,
however,
to fix matters related to our students in Poland.
Our visit in the Polish embassy in Delhi on our way back had a great importance for a closer cooperation in future.
I am flying back to Poland soon.
I will need more time (about 3 months) in order to recuperate a little.
The volunteers who came to Jeevodaya are quite busy.
I hope they will get some new experience and knowledge about this country,
its problems.
I hope they will learn about their possibilities of cooperating with us and leave Jeevodaya happy and satisfied.

A lot was happening
27.06.2009
A month has quickly passed for our guests in Poland.
A lot was happening.
Sonauram had the opportunity to visit our country from the Baltic Sea (Gdynia) up to the mountains (Szczawnica).
He had visited friends who were once in Jeevodaya and encountered Indian hospitality.
He saw our way of working and spending free time.
He was mowing the lawn next to our house where we live with great pleasure and struck friendship with the worker doing some repair and renovation works.
Both of them were speaking their own language (Polish and Hindi),
however at work they understood each other perfectly.
Only once Sonu complained that if they spoke one language they would be able to joke all day.
Father Rahul visited us in the last days of our guests' stay in Poland.
Just after being ordained as a priest,
he had been working for one year in Jeevodaya and introduced there many good ideas.
Lately,
he has been sent by his convent superiors to Rome for pedagogical studies.
His visit made our young people from India very happy,
as they have a very good contact with him.
During the last year,
when he was overcoming difficulties while studying Italian whereas they were studying Polish – they were supporting mutually.
Our young people (Manoj,
Saru and Sita) finished their one-year lasting studies of languages and deciding what they would like to do next.
Saru and Manoj got qualified to studies in English – medicine and economics.
Sita wants to continue her studies of the English language so as to raise the level of this skill in Jeevodaya.
Now,
they are going with Mami Helena,
uncle Sonauram and a group of volunteers to the Centre and their homes for well-deserved holidays.
In the meantime,
we got sad news from India.
God called,
after a long and fruitful life,
the mother of father Abraham,
the Director of the Centre.
Anna got birth to 6 sons and 1 daughter,
got many grand-children and grand-grand-children.
In her youth,
she met the first Indian saint,
sister Alfonsa,
who was teaching her at primary school.
The funeral took place on the 22nd of June in Kerala where she was living.

Children of Szczawnica – for children in India
10.06.2009
On the initiative of our Benefactors,
the organizers of the Festival of Fairy Tales (Festiwal Baśni i Bajki) in Szczawnica decided to devote this year’s festival of children to the children in faraway India.
During the festival,
which is to take place on the 21st of June,
a lottery will be held.
The income is going to be earmarked for Jeevodaya.
We will do our best so that our Polish-Indian team arrives to this beautiful part of Pieniny.
The programme of the festival may be found on the website www.szczawnica.pl (AS)

In Poland
02.06.2009
Dr Helena Pyz has been with us for a week now.
This time,
she came to Poland with one of her closest co-workers and spiritual 'son',
Sonauram.
All volunteers and guests who visited Jeevodaya know him: as a driver it is he who fetches people coming from far away at the railway station or at the airport.
Sonau came to Jeevodaya with a severe form of leprosy at a time when father Adam Wiśniewski was still alive.
He originates from the jungle in Bastar,
where he had never attended school and the inhabitants speak another dialect.
Although he cannot write nor read,
he has learnt the work of an electrician and to drive a car in Jeevodaya.
He converted to Catholicism,
set up a family and has got two charming sons.
Yesterday,
the Guests visited the Queen of Poland in Jasna Góra.
The Holy Mass before the Miraculous Icon of the Black Madonna was celebrated among others as a thanksgiving for 20 years of missionary work of dr Helena among lepers in India.
After the Holy Mass,
a small celebration was organized on that occasion by the Community of the Institute of Primate Wyszyński living next to the Jasna Góra Sanctuary.
'We are proud that one of our community members is serving this part of the Church who is the most in need',
said the Responsible General of the Institute,
Stanisława Grochowska.

Help for the starving ones in Kenia
16.05.2009
Famine is devastating Kenia.
During the last rainy season,
drought caused 5,6 mln people to be starving to death.
Crops have drastically decreased and the food of prices are at their peak.
Inhabitants of the areas affected by the crisis reduce consumption to one meal per day limitating to a maximum its cost.
Such situation intensifies the problem of malnutrition,
which in children of less than 5 years threatens with death.
The Mission Secretary of Jeevodaya joined in the humanitarian help organized by the Simba Friends foundation and Salesians centres in Poland.
Today,
Adam Rostkowski,
an employee of our Secretary,
set off in a group of 3 people to Nairobi,
where they intend to buy around 20 tonnes of food (rice,
maize meal,
bean,
corn),
which may enable to provide instant help to almost half of the inhabitants of the desert region of Korr,
situated in Northern Kenia.
<We are aware that this action will constitute only a mere drop in the bucket,
and there a grain of hope in the desert of poverty,
however we are convinced that it is worthy to help,
so as to give a chance of survival even to a small group of people.>,
as the organizers of the action wrote in their appeal.

PURI – 3rd anniversary of fr Marian’s death
30.04.2009
Today,
we are celebrating the third anniversary of father Marian's death,
when he left his lepers and went into heaven to receive his award for his many-year-lasting service for the most needed in India.
A group of 16 Polish people from Poland arrived to Puri for this special occasion.
They were joined by: Antoni Miklaszewski – the representative of Polish embassy,
Krzysztof Renik - a correspondent for the Polish Radio with his wife and me with 3 children from Jeevodaya.
Yesterday evening,
we gathered in father Marian's Ashram for a shared prayer with the representatives of other religions.
Abp Raphael Cheenath blessed the new building designed for the administration of the school and the works in the leper colony.
The embassy representative and I had the privilege to cut the ribbon in the entrances of the building.
Next,
we paid the customary homage with flowers in front of the father Marian's big portrait.
Several people were asked to share their memories about father Marian.
I said in Hindi that he had been a Friend and Teacher to me.
I asked everybody to keep his school of love and respect for other people and to hand them down to the following generations.
The prayers were accompanied by Indian dances performed by children of Beatrix school.
The celebrations ended with a thanksgiving song performed by the Brothers Missionaries of Charity.
Today,
on the exact hour of father Marian's death,
the group of Polish people gathered for a common thanksgiving prayer for the long,
extraordinary service to God and people.
In the evening,
there is going to be a shared Mass in the Ashram.
It is going to begin in the room-museum of Father Marian,
and then,
we are going to pass to the Chapel,
in a procession,
singing a responsorial psalm for the further part of the liturgy.
There is also going to be a marriage of one of the spiritual daughters of father Marian,
celebrated by the Provincial of Polish Fathers of the Divine Word,
father Andrzej Danilewicz.
On Saturday,
the Polish group is going to visit father Marian's tomb in the distant Jharsaguda,
and we are taking our way back to our Jeevodaya.

Bicycle expedition
28.04.2009
Summer seems to have settled for good in Poland,
so the time for longer cycling trips has started.
For the youngsters from Jeevodaya,
the Saturday expedition will for sure be for different reasons unforgettable.
They haven't ridden on bikes so far (Gocławek-Kabaty and return that is around 40 km) for recreational reasons only,
and it has never cost them so much effort.
The youngsters were accompanied by volunteers and friends of Jeevodaya.

OUR CELEBRATIONS
15.04.2009
People often ask me how we spend the catholic feasts in Jeevodaya.
Our community is multicultural and there are few different religions and faiths here,
nevertheless the Centre is led by Catholics.
There are,
however,
some slight differences in the liturgy of solemn celebrations.
This is the expression of the inculturation recommended by the Church.
From the very beginning,
there is one characteristic difference which is the habit of putting off shoes before enter the church.
It might be a distant echo from the burning bush that “the earth on which you are walking is a holy land”.
The women usually cover their heads,
as they do it when meeting anybody to whom they want to show respect.
During the Mass of the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday,
the priest leans over the feet of 12 men and washes them in the memory of the gesture of love performed by Christ.
Can you imagine living through this gesture of humbleness towards a leper? Leaning over and washing the feet distorted by leprosy? For me,
this is always a deeply moving experience of the Holy Gospel.
The adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until midnight in the dark cell takes place in groups.
Adult inhabitants of Jeevodaya usually finish the adoration.
In the hottest period of the day,
at 3 o'clock on Good Friday,
we begin our way with the cross.
This year instead of me,
the cross was carried by a young nurse up to the first station in front of the out-patient clinic.
The particular stations are situated in front of the Catholic houses and the girls’ and boys’ boarding house.
Each one has prepared his comment to a particular station.
The sections of the way of the cross are different.
On the way,
we sing laments.
This day the strict fasting was observed by almost everybody,
regardless of their faith.
We begin the service of the Easter eve before the cave in order to carry the light in a procession way to the church.
This year one girl was baptized.
For a long time,
she didn't reveal any wish to belong to the catholic church,
because she belongs to a the lowest untouchable caste.
A few years have passed since Mamta understood that we are all equal in the church.
Baptized as Elisabeth,
many times she expressed her happiness.
However,
a few times in the last days she asked me if I am happy too.
What is the happiness from Jesus resurrection,
the hope of our resurrection for the people affected with leprosy? I think that for those who decided to be baptized,
it is the only hope for rising from the disease and bodily injuries,
restoring the dignity of God's children,
revival in love and unity in the community of the faithful.
The joy from the Easter Sunday underlined by a common meal would have gone late into the night if it were not for the fact that the children are in the course of the examination session.
Instead on Good Friday,
we were also celebrating this night my birthday and the birthday of two children.
On Easter Monday,
we are coming back to regular work.
There is no drenching people with water! (HP)

The first children are already free!
23.03.2009
Not even two hours have passed after the last written exam of the 10th classes when two girls came up to say goodbye before going home for holidays.
One moment later they were ready to leave!
Since yesterday,
parents have been waiting in Raipur for this moment,
and all the more our youth.
All,
one by one,
assure me that they will continue their studies.
One young boy intends to enter the lower Pallotine seminary.
One girl is willing to build computers in the future.
We also have candidates for nurses.
However,
one is certain – if they want to continue their studies,
they have to finish two more classes and this is already possible here.
And the new school building is in construction.
Exams in the 5th and 8th classes have already started.
College students have already reached their halfway point,
whereas the 12th classes are just finishing.
They will leave the Centre,
one by one,
but most children will be free only at the end of April.
However,
everybody yearns for holidays.
I hope they will not only indulge in blissful idleness then,
what I warmly discourage them.
As for me,
my holidays are planned for June only.
At present,
I am finishing the fiscal year and have plenty of office work.

School-leaving examinations have begun
03.03.2009
Yesterday 12th class students began their school-leaving exams,
whereas today – the 10th class students.
Several days before,
they took their practical exam in science,
which is also included in the general mark.
Our young students have already passed their hindi language exam.
They will take exams in subsequent subjects at different time intervals.
We are awaiting one of the biggest feasts – Holi.
For our youth this is of great profit,
as they will have a little more time to prepare to the next exam.
Next the time will come for the 5th and 8th classes.
The remaining children will take their internal exams after Easter.
It is already hot here.
Today,
in the early afternoon hours,
the temperature reached 38°C in the shadow,
but we still have pleasant nights and mornings.
Myself,
I am starting a training in the DOTS program – eradication of tuberculosis.
In theory,
it is a very effective program,
however,
knowing the realities,
I doubt in the possibility of its widespread introduction.
We have decided to join in the program,
so...
my medical team has to take up a new,
difficult challenge.

20 years have passed…
15.02.2009
on the 14th of February,
dr Helena Pyz set out on her first journey to India.
Preparations,
including expectations for the invitation and the visa,
had lasted a considerable time,
but what was to come was a great unknown.
The flight with Polish airlines (at that time we still had a direct connection with India) had an inland stop in Tashkent for fuel supplement.
Sister Barbara Birczyńska was waiting for her at the airport in Delhi.
After a night spent in a hostel of a catholic organization in Delhi,
they set out on a 32-hour lasting journey by train to Jeevodaya,
which dr Helena saw for the first time on the 17th of February.
Although she didn’t know the local language and the customs were surprising and unintelligible,
she readily understood that this is a place to which she would like to serve with all her might.
She had to come back to Poland after 6 months in order to get a residential visa,
but this was a matter of coming back to ‘her’ Jeevodaya.
Our congratulations to dr Helena and we wish her perseveration in the work on our Lord’s mission.

Celebrations of the World Lepers' Day
30.01.2009
On the World Lepers' Day (last Sunday of January) our community of Friends of Jeevodaya from Warsaw gathered at a mass in the chapel of Primate Wyszyński house.
We were praying together with the Centre,
where in that very day the Archbishop of Raipur Joseph was summoning the Holy Spirit,
administering the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist to a numerous group of inhabitants (including 11 children for the first time).
We were also praying for Christians in Orissa and all the poor and persecuted in the Word.
After the mass,
young people performed a scene based on the Bible and referring to the meeting of a leper with Jesus.
The World Lepers Day in India is always celebrated on the 30th of January,
on the anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi ‘s death.
This year,
it has been celebrated very modestly.
During the morning mass,
we were praying fervently for the necessary graces for all people suffering from leprosy all over the Word,
for our Benefactors and Friends.

We are catching up
18.01.2009
Today,
during the Holy Eucharist,
three children were introduced to the Catholic Church.
Their catholic parents,
formerly living here,
had not completed this task towards them.
Two older sisters asked for baptism two years before,
next Sunday the third one will receive her First Communion,
so the three of them were baptized today with their mother?s consent.
One more boy from the fourth class awaits baptism in the nearest time.
More is needed to be done in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Both young people who were baptized in childhood and older ones,
some of them baptized still in father Adam Wiśniewski?s times,
have not yet been confirmed.
Next Sunday,
on the 25th of January,
in our church,
the archbishop of Raipur,
Joseph Augustine will administer confirmation to around 40 people and 11 children will receive their First Communion.
We are intensely preparing ours! elves to this celebration.
Please,
support us with your prayer.
