World Leprosy Day
31st January 2010  57 World Leprosy Day
It is also called Day of Fighting with Leprosy or Lepers Day. Its promoter and originator – the French traveller Raoul Follereau – wanted to remind the world, especially to its rich and self-satisfied part, that this terrible disease still exists. This day is always celebrated on the last Sunday of January.
In Poland, in some catholic newspapers,  brief press publications appear on that day, sometimes we can hear a call to prayer for the people suffering from this disease on a Mass during the prayer of the faithful. Despite this, many educated people do not know that leprosy still exists and in reality changes the life of thousands of people to a nightmare.
We encourage all our Friends and Helpers to an active contribution to this day in our Homeland.
On the 11th October 2009, the Holy Father Benedict XVI gave the world a new saint, father  Damian de Vesteur, the patron of the lepers. For many Polish people father Damian was an inspiration and  hero model. With the intercession of Saint Damian, let pray for those suffering from leprosy and for their minders. Let pray God that mobilization and humanitarian effort of many men and women contribute to the real elimination of this disease.
The Missionary Secretary of Jeevodaya together with the Association of Friends of Father Marian Żelazek organizes a Mass in the intention of people suffering from leprosy in the Cathedral of Saint Florian in Warsaw-Prague at 12. 30 (earlier at 12.00 there will be a presentation linked with the 40th anniversary of the Jeevodaya Centre, and after the Mass, it will be possible to see the exhibition on the Jeevodaya Centre and the colony of lepers in Puri).
We have also prepared a brochure illustrating the size of this tragedy caused by leprosy and which could be prevented, as well as a poster on the World Leprosy Day with a free space for the information on the local meeting. (this place can be left free, and the poster hanged as a reminder that such day is celebrated). We can send all these materials in a printed form (poster in a A4 format, brochure in  a A6 format) or a PDF file if somebody wants to print the poster single-handedly (A3 format). All interested are asked to get in touch with the Secretariat.
